David MacKinnon is a Canadian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who first came to attention as co-founder of the experimental indie folk duo FemBots. In a career spanning 30 years, FemBots have released six records, with a seventh currently in the works. Alongside the band, MacKinnon has built a distinct body of solo work ranging from piano-based instrumental music to stripped-down songs for guitar and voice. A through line in all his work is a gift for storytelling and a knack for crafting songs that sound like they've always existed. His latest solo album, I Never Needed More Than This, was produced by Sandro Perri and will be released in fall of 2026.
Hamilton's Patient Whales is the indie folk solo project of Paul Watson (Dog Is Blue, Bay Mud), that layers rueful storytelling and troubadour underpinnings in washes of ambient pedals and glitches. He can usually be found in the wee hours tangled in cables and draped in blinking lights, crafting wry songs about not being able to sleep.
